New windshield? The camera behind it may need recalibration.
Many modern safety systems use a camera mounted to the windshield. After the glass is replaced, that camera often needs to be recalibrated so lane-keeping, adaptive cruise, and automatic braking systems have the correct reference point.
What the target board is for
Your vehicle's forward camera reads lane lines, vehicles ahead, pedestrians, and other road information through the windshield. Replacing the glass can change the camera's alignment enough that the system needs to be recalibrated. A static calibration uses precisely positioned targets like this one so the camera can relearn its correct reference point.
Whether your vehicle needs a static calibration, a dynamic road-drive calibration, or both depends on the manufacturer. Dynamic calibrations, which cover Ford, Chevy, Dodge, BMW, and many others, are performed in-house. What ADAS means
ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. It includes features such as lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Many of those systems rely on a forward-facing camera mounted behind the rearview mirror.
When the windshield is replaced, the camera's position relative to the road can change slightly. Recalibration confirms that the camera is aimed correctly for the systems that depend on it.

Recalibration questions
How do I know if my car needs recalibration?
If your vehicle has lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, or automatic emergency braking, there is almost certainly a camera behind the rearview mirror. Any windshield replacement on that vehicle should be followed by recalibration. Tell us your year, make, and model and we'll tell you.
Is recalibration done at the same time as the windshield?
For vehicles that use dynamic calibration, which includes most Ford, Chevy, Dodge, and BMW models, yes: it's done in-house as part of the same visit and adds about 20 minutes. Vehicles that require a static target-board calibration are completed through our certified calibration partner, and we'll walk you through that scheduling before the job is booked.
What happens if it isn't recalibrated?
The camera may be aimed incorrectly, which can affect when driver-assistance systems respond. Most manufacturers require recalibration after windshield replacement for that reason.
